The Last Beach

Colleen Terrell Comer lives and works in the heat and humidity of Mobile, Alabama. She grew up on the edge of a swamp and spent her summers barefoot and dirty. She creates paintings, sculptures and performances that explore the surreal constructs and contradictions of everyday life and womanhood- with specific influences from the coastal southern culture in which she was braised. Community is an important part of Comer’s practice and acts as an extension of her visual work. She has been active throughout her career in artists collectives (Redux Contemporary Art Center in Charleston,SC and The Rumor Union in Mobile, AL) and in public art collaborations. In 2019 Comer founded a creative feminist Mardi Gras marching society to promote fellowship and revelry.

Comer completed her BFA at Auburn University in 2002 and her MFA Art Practice at the School of Visual Arts. Her work has shown in museum surveys including the Montgomery Museum of Fine Art and the Mobile Museum of Art and was selected as part of the MUSC Contemporary Carolina Collection curated by Mark Sloan from the Halsey Institute of Art. Comer was recently included in New American Paintings 2020 MFA issue and included in a group show with Field Projects Gallery in NYC.
